Christmastime seems like the perfect time to consider the differences between "wants" and "needs." That's what the second graders did as we read Those Shoes by Maribeth Boelts. This is a thought provoking book about a boy who begins his story with, "I have dreams about those shoes. Black high-tops. Two white stripes." He deals with embarrassment and disappointment, but he demonstrates caring and generosity. After some discussion and thinking, each second grader added to a list of wants and needs, and that list was used to create a wordle. Interesting and FUN!
